Gracie, Dead or Alive

Title: Gracie, Dead or Alive
Author: Sofia Diana Gabel
Genre: Paranormal, Romance
Publishing date: 16th September, 2015
Published by: Escargot Books and Music
Pages: 284

My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

A story of the living, the undead, magic, betrayal, love, more betrayal, and blueberry pancakes. Gracie Daniels has it all. She’s young, pretty, in love and about to graduate from the University of Southern California, but her world is turned upside down when she wakes up, dead, in the morgue. But that’s only the beginning of Gracie’s new undead life. She has to learn to survive impending decomposition from a Wiccan spell that went wrong and numerous betrayals, all while searching for a mysterious alchemical spell book. Then along comes handsome Troy Scott. How can Gracie balance being dead and falling in love? It would be easier to give up, but that’s not Gracie. She’s no quitter, although if she doesn’t find a solution soon, nothing will matter.

My Take:

A story of the living, the undead, magic, betrayal, love, more betrayal, and blueberry pancakes.

I enjoyed this story. It flew by for me. A fun story always makes you forget to look at the clock. 😀

This is a light hearted story where you don’t have to apply logic much because, well, that will make the story lose it’s charm. Come on, blueberries work on the dead and other’s don’t? Why? 😛 Better not to get into logic and just enjoy the story. 😛

With a novice Wiccan witch, Terra, experimenting with the reanimating spell, Gracie is brought back to life, well, the undead life? 😛

Terra tells Gracie that she should not be seen by anyone as she is dead to everyone after being struck by a lightening and then leaves the undead Gracie alone in the morgue. Who does that? 😛

Gracie sometimes seemed borderline stupid. Her priorities were all messed up. After coming back from the dead, instead of figuring out stuff she goes to her boyfriend’s place only to find him cheating on her merely after 6 hours of her death, she jumpscares the girl he was cheating on her with, which was very funny. 😛

She goes home and thinks about what she was going to do now. Then what she does? She cleans the house so that her parents won’t have to. So, was cleaning the house more important than trying harder to find answers? She was trying to take her mind off the situation but HELLO? Dead mind? That’s a problem.

One thing she does well is, hitting every damn person who is mindless enough to call her a bitch. I loved all of those little action sequences. I am against violence. Humans shouldn’t hurt other living beings but she isn’t exactly alive, is she? 😛

Screenshot_2016-01-09-09-34-54-1Terra is your typical bimbo. She is the fun element of the book. Gracie had these thoughts about her every time they met and that made me laugh. 😛

She is dead, a dwarf named alchaemical man steals the book that can save her, instead of worrying about her situation she is more worried about the hot police officer, Troy she meets. Get your priorities straight, girl. You aren’t exactly alive. Can you please focus on that instead of fantasizing Troy?

Her ignorance and vague priorities get Troy killed in the end which was an accident. So, what does she do? She reanimates Troy because well, she was so happy being reanimated herself, right? All this while she kept blaming Terra for reanimating her without her permission and then she goes ahead and does the same to Troy.

The segments where she had to keep on gluing back all of her decomposing self back together was chilling and a nice touch to the story.

Even after Gracie being not so smart, I really enjoyed this book. 🙂

Why would I pick this book up?

A light and funny read? Here, you have it. 😉

Let’s get on with the review, shall we? 🙂

The Ghost Chronicles (Book #1)

Title: The Ghost Chronicles
Author: Marlo Berliner
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy
Publishing date: November 2015
Published by: Teddy Blue Books
Pages: 332

My Rating: 4/5 stars

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything – a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he’s a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he’s stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there’s also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the “joining” of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don’t know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he’s being pursued. Demons are after him because he’s a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn’t such a good idea.

My Take:

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

This is the premise of the book. Everything in this book seems to be written with great thought and care. Nothing seemed to be rushed or ignored. The summary of the book is a good example in itself. 😉 How well it explains the book in few words. This summary actually summarizes the book. Kudos to the author for that! 😀

Screenshot_2016-01-09-08-20-35-1This is from where the real story starts,
with the death of Michael. It is so well written that you can feel yourself at his place. The confusion that Michael goes through in the start makes you reach out for him. He slowly figures out that he will never be able to walk on earth alive again.

Seeing his family mourn for him and not being able to do anything is such an emotional scene.

Michael is a good kid who died at eighteen. A kid with so much potential, a caring brother, a loving son, a responsible and understanding boyfriend, a good basketball player; with no fault of his, everything comes to an end for him.

After getting through the initial shock of being dead and trying to figure out how death works, Michael starts searching for answers.Screenshot_2016-01-09-08-20-45-2

That is when he meets Tom. Tom is also a phantom, a protector. He guides Michael throughout the book. Although giving Michael all the answers at once would have been much easier but, well, that’s not how it works, right? 😛

I loved this explanation Tom gives about the souls or energies, as he explains, being stuck on earth, among the living.

The way Tom explained being dead, our use of mind, being ghosts, I found it all very reasonable. Paranormal that makes sense? Too good. 😛 😉

Then comes the devil. Now’s the time to get you some action. The Devil logic was also borderline smart. I think there was not a single part in the book that would challenge intelligence or stoop for stupidity.

Screenshot_2016-01-09-08-22-06-1Michael was sure whining for almost the whole book as if he was the only one who had problems. When Tom tells him this, I was like, “It’s high time someone told him that. Thank you, Tom.” 😛

All in all this is an entertaining book but not much happens in the book. The summary is the actual length of the story. The rest is all Michael whining, trying to figure out things, Tom disappearing and giving next to no information. At the end guess what happens, you are left hanging, yes, there’s going to be another book.

Why does this happen? Hello, I am hanging here, can we get the new book already? 😛

Why would I pick it up?

Learning how to be dead? Yes, please! 😉 😛

About Mayan Blood:

Their empires have fallen, but their mythology lives on…

Zanya Coreandero is a seventeen-year-old orphan with only a single friend and no hope for a normal life. Diagnosed with anxiety and night terrors, no one believes her cuts and bruises are a result of an evil entity, and not a brutal case of self-harm.

With the only home she’s ever known being the isolated institution—where breakfast is a handful of medications, the psychiatry sessions are mandatory, and her every move is watched—the only relief is her red-haired roommate named Tara, who’s more like a little sister than her best friend.

Free will is strong, but destiny is stronger.

When Zanya is kidnapped, she meets a group of gifted Mayan descendants, each with a unique ability. Gone from a nameless castaway to the only hope of mankind, Zanya is forced to make a grueling decision: bond with an enchanted stone and save humanity from rising underworld forces, or watch helplessly as Earth falls victim to a familiar dark deity from her dreams. This time, he’s playing for keeps.

A wicked secret hides behind a handsome face…

When Arwan, a dark-eyed timebender, takes interest in Zanya’s mission, it’s unclear if his intention is to help, or if he’s on a hell-bent mission for revenge. Wary of falling for another guy with major secrets and a tainted past, Zanya fights to keep her distance. If only her heart gave her a choice.

It sucks being ordinary when everyone else is superhuman…

A mortal girl with a tainted past, Tara is left to deal with an overwhelming sense of inadequacy. Her boyfriend, Peter, is a healer. Her best friend is The Guardian, and everyone else is a powerhouse of awesome strengths. Meanwhile, she struggles to leave her childhood of abuse in the past, and while Peter picks her up every time she falls, it becomes clear he deserves better.

When they opened Pandora’s Box, hell came pouring out…

When she’s given a chance to aid in the group’s mission, Tara is eager to pull her own weight, even if it means uncovering buried memories of being held prisoner by the underworld general. Now haunted with flashbacks of torture, Tara wanders from the safety of Peter’s arms into a city of depravity and corruption. And amidst all this evil is a young man with an agenda of his own, who leads her down a road that will either prove she is a hero at heart, or drag her into a world she’s always feared.

He wants revenge, she wants redemption. And in an underground ring of missing girls and bloody sacrifices, only the fearless can survive…

About Lights of Aurora:

After living her entire life in an orphan asylum, Zanya fears she may actually be losing her mind.

Following the discovery of her ancient Maya bloodlines, eighteen-year-old Zanya Coreandero is faced with a daunting responsibility. She must protect the relic stone while Sarian, the underworld general, ceaselessly drives her to the brink of insanity.

With the approach of an ancient bonding ceremony, Zanya struggles to control her abilities—and her desires…

As the winter solstice approaches, it brings an onslaught of unexpected side effects. While Zanya struggles to seize control over her supercharged powers, she must also face an overwhelming suspicion that her boyfriend, Arwan, is hiding a secret so dark it could destroy them both. And with her powers finally taking root, the struggle to pace their relationship takes on a life of its own.

Just when she thought life couldn’t get more complicated…

With the arrival of a surprise houseguest, Zanya’s deepest fears about Arwan are confirmed. And when middleworld deities intercede, the group of gifted Maya descendants are confronted with hardships they never saw coming—including an enemy more deadly than they have ever faced.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And when that woman has no soul and a taste for revenge, they will need the powers of every surviving ancestor simply to stay alive.

Author’s Bio:

Theresa DaLayne is a north-south-east-western kind of girl with a quirky personality to match her nomad life. Born in California, she migrated to three different cities in Washington State, a tiny island in Alaska, North Carolina, and finally to the suburbs of Ohio where she currently lives with her husband, three kids, vegetarian cat, and her ungrateful fish.

Always on the lookout for a new story, Theresa is a shameless eavesdropper and will take anyone who provides inspiration and mold them into a character without a second thought. She enjoys writing both paranormal and contemporary stories, considering her mind wanders between worlds of fantasy while she’s forced to live in the real world, very much against her will.

My Take:

Before I start with what I felt about this book, I want to tell you guys that I don’t have any highlighted quotes right now because my tablet froze. As soon as the device decides that it should start working again, I will update the review with the quotes. 🙂

Okay, so why I selected this book can be told by the summary of the book. 😀

Post-apocalyptic world and that too not too far in time made sense for it to sound more real. You know, when humans didn’t have much time to evolve things around them and almost completely forget the world as it is now. The first line of the summary hooked me and when I started the book the first paragraph of the foreword had the same effect. 😀

I liked all of the characters, they are well thought off and instantly likeable. 🙂 I doubted bromance between Griffin and Penn before the romance between Griffin and Tassta. 😉 The romance doesn’t look forced and doesn’t interrupt the story line which I find to be a thing to appreciate in books now-a-days. 😛

Tassta is a true example for feminism, she desperately wants to be a Guardian of the Brotherhood. She doesn’t want to be like the men but she wants to be alongside them. She understands her weaknesses and strengths. That’s what feminism is about, although the book isn’t focused on that but hell, I like finding things that are hidden, as you all know. 😛 The hidden treasure. 😛

The characters are really likeable and I found it easy to get into the book and feel attached. 🙂 I liked how the author instructed how the name of the main characters are to be pronounced in the start of the book. That was very thoughtful. 🙂

I am excited for the next book. 😀

I like the cover, it shows Griffin and Tassta but maybe, just maybe, something else would have made the cover more interesting. Just a thought. What do you guys think?

Why would I pick it up?

The summary is appealing and so is the book. 😉

Blog Tour | ARC Review | Mathieu by Irene Ferris

Click on the banner to see the complete tour schedule. 😀

Welcome to my stop of the blog tour for the book “Mathieu” by Irene Ferris, hosted by Sage’s Blog Tours.

Let’s get on with the review, shall we? 🙂

Title: Mathieu
Author: Irene Ferris
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publishing date: 27th October , 2015
Published by: Robyn Lane Books
Pages: 296

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

When Mathieu followed his king to war, he knew the Crusades were holy, that God went with him, and that he would return to the arms of his truest love. 800 years later, enslaved by the demon Gadreel, all Mathieu knows is pain.

After winning his freedom, Mathieu emerges from the dark void of captivity, only to find himself facing the soul of the love he left behind, in the eyes of Jenn Bartlett. Can he do the
terrifying thing she asks of him, and still save her from the monster he has become? Or will the darkness overcome them both?

My Take:

If I look at this book in philosophical terms like the English teachers always try to do with any piece of work, then I can say that it throws a great deal of light on the problem with too much power. 😛 Power is something that almost all of the humanity craves in some form or another and we all know that not many of the people with power play fair, too much of anything is always dangerously but power most certainly tops that list.

The person with power lives in the illusion of controlling things, manipulating things but in real it’s the power that takes over the person, manipulates him and turns him into something he might not have been otherwise. Power feeds on the evil in the person’s mind and keeps growing making them more evil and in turn more powerful.

This book shows exactly how power, atleast excess of it, can destroy everything in it’s wake. Power in the form of a demon Gadreel, whom Mathieu is bound to, shows the cruelty and then when it is destroyed and the energy and power is all transferred to Matheiu, because Gadreel was bound to him too, and because Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be transferred from one form to another; when Mathieu gets all that he never wanted, the struggle he faces to keep the evil inside him is painful to the reader.

The emotions of this book are strong and every emotion gets you head on. I really felt for Mathieu, his pain, his suffering, and the belief he held onto despite all that he suffered is really heart touching.

It’s a paranormal romance. Jenn is supposed to be the soul of the person Mathieu loved 800 years ago but to be honest I liked the relationship between Jenn and Marcus, Jenn’s Husband, more. Marcus is the most understanding husband you can have. He is a great leader and a good person. A person that can be a rock in someone’s life. Dwayne was also a character I warmed up to. He was a member of the foundation Jenn and Marcus were a part of. He could see bits and pieces of future and heard voices and had his own demons to fight. He understood Mathieu and found someone who understood him in Mathieu. All the characters felt real, nothing spiced up, just plain and simple. The emotions strong and their reactions justified.

The cover of the book is so perfectly in sync with the climax of the book that you can almost feel the energy radiating from it.

There was nothing to not like about this book. The character, the setting, the story, the time it is set in, the circumstances, the little mysteries, and most importantly the emotions all connect well. I really liked the book although I would have liked some more at the ending. The ending could have had 2 or 3 pages more at the very least.

Why would I pick it up?

This book is a amazing work on giving a reality check on how harmful power can be and how much determination, belief, and willpower can help win over anything. 😀
