Could their backgrounds be any more different? Rick Vasquez, a K-9 unit sergeant with the San Diego Police Department, fled drug-related violence in Mexico as a boy. Madison Long, who recently became primary veterinarian to the SDPD’s canines, is the privileged daughter of a judge. Rick has dedicated his life to curtailing cross-border drug trafficking and preventing other young boys from being drawn into the dark world of the cartels.

But everything Rick and Madison value, and the growing love between them, is threatened by the dangers of Rick’s job, and the risks he’s determined to take…

Excerpt

Enrique flinched at the burst of gunfire. That slight motion nearly made him lose his balance. He’d been hiding in the corner of his closet for a while, as high up as possible, bracing himself with his back against one wall and his feet against the facing wall. It wasn’t the first time he’d hidden there, trying to avoid discovery, but at twelve he was almost too big to fit. His muscles spasmed from the exertion. He rubbed his thigh, trying to get the blood circulating.

The next round of gunfire sounded as if it came from the hall. Despite the stifling heat in the dark, cramped space, he felt icy perspiration on his brow. The door to his room banged open, accompanied by a rapid exchange in Spanish and the clatter of booted feet rushing in. He bit down on his lower lip to keep from crying out. He heard a swooshing sound, which he guessed was the cover being torn off his bed; under it, he’d stuffed a couple of pillows to resemble a body. He’d prayed they’d take their shot and not bother to check if he was there.

He wasn’t that lucky.

A loud crash—likely a piece of furniture toppling—startled him. Movement halted as the cartel enforcer yelled again to someone outside the room.

Then he heard heavy footsteps approaching. His closet door was yanked open and light flooded in. Looking sideways, he saw the barrel of a machine gun slide in and ruffle the hanging clothes that were concealing him.

The barrel paused a mere six inches from his hip. He knew he was as good as dead if they found him. Petrified, the boy held his breath…

And waking from his nightmare, the man bolted up in bed, drenched in sweat and gasping for air.

Rick Vasquez raked back the damp hair from his forehead with both hands and glanced at the glowing red numerals of his bedside clock. Still shy of five in the morning. He’d barely had three hours’ sleep, but getting any more was out of the question. This was not how he’d hoped to start his day.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed. With his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands, he gave himself a moment to let the vestiges of the nightmare fade and his heartrate level out.

Sniff, his narcotics detection canine partner, scurried to his side and nuzzled him.

Rick straightened and stroked the yellow Labrador retriever’s head. He felt Sniff’s tension subside. He and Sniff had been working together since the day he’d joined the San Diego Police Department’s K-9 Unit six years ago. They were as connected as it was possible for any man and dog to be. The contact steadied him as much as the dog.

Sniff slid down and stretched out across Rick’s bare feet, head nestled between his paws.

Rick exhaled heavily. It had been a while since he’d had the nightmare. He recalled the fourteen-year-old kid he’d caught the night before, crossing the San Ysidro border from Tijuana into San Diego with a kilo of marijuana, and he should’ve expected that the nightmare would revisit him.

Owen, is one of the first to disappear. To save him, Derry must strike a deal with the murderous subversives, and risk a daring raid to infiltrate the heart of the extraction operation.

EXCERPT:

Someone gives a feeble clap. “Magnificent! A most rousing speech to rally the heathens, Mason!”

My feet fuse to the floor at the raspy voice that wafts into the room. Tucker strains at his collar. I yank him back, my heart pounding.

A shrunken man with an unnatural stoop steps into view. My skin crawls with a new level of fear. My gun’s in the Crematauto, along with the rest of the weapons. I fumble around in my pocket and latch onto my switchblade. A trickle of sweat runs down behind my ears. The man standing in the entry looks freakishly old and frail. Tucker could take him down in a heartbeat, but my brain sounds an inner caution. He probably didn’t come alone.

Before I even finish my thought, the doorway darkens and four armed men in black fatigues troop through. Big-shouldered, faces set like flint on necks thick as tree stumps. Schutz Clones! I tighten my grip on Tucker and command him to stay. One false move and he’ll end up another carcass waiting to be incinerated. He minds me, but tension radiates through his collar.

“Welcome to the Craniopolis,” the old man says. “My apologies for the modest welcoming committee, but your timing is most unfortunate. Everyone is at the unveiling of our new Hovermedes prototype.” His body shakes out a shallow breath, as he shuffles toward me. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dr. Lyong.”

I slide my gaze in Mason’s direction. His face registers confusion. Then a flicker of recognition.

“What … happened to you?” he asks, in a half-whisper.

Dr. Lyong jerks to a stop in front of me and lets out a long, trembling sigh. It’s all I can do not to gag. His breath smells of decaying compost.

“Restructuring DNA proved more complex than I had hoped.” Dr. Lyong runs a finger under his beaked nose and waves it dismissively in Mason’s direction. The skin is stretched so tight over his hand I can see the grape-colored veins forking out beneath it. He barely looks human.

I can’t repress a shudder.

~EXCERPT~
My heart felt as if it would burst from my chest as I watched hopelessly while Ethryen ascended into midair, his fingers tightly wrapped around Chace’s neck. “Chace!” I cried, running towards them.
Jesse grabbed my arm and tugged me back. “Don’t!” he warned as Ethryen floated over the dark pit with Chace. “He’ll drop him.”
“Do something!” I screamed at him, and then looked across at Ophelia and the man with long gray hair.
They took slow steps forward but halted when Ethryen yelled, “Back! Or I’ll release him to the depths of this pit!”
“Why can’t you just give up?” Chace choked out. “It’s over!”
Ethryen growled. “It’s never over!” He drenched himself in a massive amount of red flames. It seeped from his body and trailed along the rocks to the ground of the cave, blazing all around us. “Give me the amulet or watch them die!”
Chace struggled to free himself, clawing at Ethryen’s fiery hand at his neck.
I moved forward again. Jesse wrenched me back. “We have to help him!” I shouted through clenched teeth.
Ethryen glared down at me, cackling viciously. He commanded his flames to blaze higher. It flared in front of me and Jesse, forcing us back against the rocks. Jesse moved me behind him, protecting me from the flames. I tightly grasped his arm, desperate, wanting so badly to stop Ethryen once and for all.
The monster spun back to Chace. “The amulet!” he barked. “Release the power to me! Now!”
Chace gazed down at me with widened eyes, remorse veiling his face. Then with his left hand he started to rifle in his pocket.
“Don’t do it!” Ophelia urged. She tried to diminish Ethryen’s flames with her own, but it was useless. The fire only blazed more, keeping us back.
Fearing for our lives, Chace snatched the amulet out of his pocket and held it up before Ethryen.
“No!” Dorin, the older man, and Ophelia shouted all at once.
“Speak the words!” Ethryen ordered. “Now!”
“Stop your flames first!” Chace bargained, tight-lipped and fuming.
Ethryen growled, “Do you really think you can bargain with me, boy?” He waved his free hand and the red flames edged closer to us. Our backs pressed against the rocks. Should his fire touch our bodies it would have the same impact on the others as it did on me earlier. And I wasn’t sure I’d survive another hit like that.
“I’ll do it!” Chace hollered fearfully, his hand shaking with the amulet. He looked down at me, and I knew what he was about to do. Chace would give Ethryen what he wanted just so he could protect me.
I couldn’t allow it.
There must be a way to stop this.

Despair Desire Greed Final

EXCERPT:

I felt him move closer then he pressed his hard, lean body into my back.

“Hello, Cass. I’m Greg.”

I breathed deeply, and closing my eyes, I took a step forward. I shook my head, wanting to scream that I didn’t know him, but at the same time, I just…I couldn’t. I wanted him and knew it as soon as he’d stepped into the elevator. I knew it because my nipples tightened and every hair, not just the ones on my neck, raised. I prayed the elevator would move faster. Tension crackled everywhere in that tiny space, and I shivered. I wanted this stranger.

“H-hello, Greg,” I managed to reply, tightly crossing my arms on my heavy breasts.

“We don’t have much time. I’d like us to stop talking now so that I can help with your problem. I have a condom.”

I closed my eyes tighter, trying to keep my breathing in control. My mouth went dry and I lost all train of thought so all I could say to that was: “Um, huh?”

“Shh,” he whispered at my ear, moving my hair to the left shoulder.

My pulse raced. He said nothing else. I saw his chocolate hand reach past me to the control panel and pulled the stop button. Next, the power shut off and it was dark. Pitch black dark, and it made me even more aware of the heat and tension that crackled like an open flame between us.

I felt his hand on my thigh, then my skirt hiked up achingly slow. His other hand gradually lowered down my quivering belly into the waist of my skirt. His fingers slithered inside my panties and I felt like I was choking as I panted in anticipation and waited… waited for his hand to reach where I needed him.

His finger finally reached my clit and circled it slowly. I gasped and threw my head back, the base landing on his hard chest. I heard my panties rip and then his other hand cupped my ass, then his long fingers entered me and I gasped when he began to stroke.

“You can tell me to stop, Cass,” he whispered heatedly into my ear.

Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

Author’s Bio:

Born and raised in the Midwest, Ryanne Anthony is a wife, mother of two, daydream believer and writer whose third passion is giving life to the characters that occupy her mind, in hopes that she thoroughly entertains her reader and earn a fan or two.

“My goals in writing are to make my reader laugh, gasp, scream, yell, get angry, cry and nod. At the end of every story, I want them to THINK on what I’ve written, possibly identify on a storyline or two. Every book, I try to do that. I want to entertain you, to not regret spending time ‘inside my head’.”
